Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP)

How it works

LIEAP assists eligible households with the cost of home heating through direct cash payments or payments to utility companies on their behalf. The Bureau for Family Assistance says the program runs in each of the West Virginia Department of Human Services field offices for a short time each winter, usually beginning with a mail-out to targeted households. In addition, the state contracts with the Community Action Network and regional Agency on Aging offices to perform outreach and accept applications at local sites.

The main benefit helps pay for home heating costs. A crisis component is also available for households without resources that are facing the loss of a heating source.
