How it works
The Fairmont Fire Department offers free home fire-safety inspections and smoke alarm installations for residents who may be unable to do the work themselves. The service is only available for owner-occupied homes within the city limits of Fairmont.
What the money covers
This is a free service, not a cash grant. At no cost to the resident, the department will perform:
- Testing and inspection of smoke alarms
- Replacement of batteries in smoke alarms
- One-time installation of one smoke alarm for every bedroom
- One additional smoke alarm for every floor of residential occupancies
- Installation of one carbon monoxide alarm in homes with carbon monoxide risk
- Information and education on home fire safety
How to apply
Residents can click the request link on the city page to schedule a free visit.
Timing and deadlines
The page does not list an application deadline, funding cap, or waitlist. It presents the service as an ongoing program.
Important notes
- Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years.
- If an alarm chirps every 30 to 60 seconds after the battery is replaced, the alarm needs to be replaced.
- If you live outside the city limits, the page says to contact your local fire department or the American Red Cross for alarm installation help.
- The page says alarms are only provided when installed by trained firefighters; residents cannot simply pick them up for self-installation.
