Wildfire mitigation services in property insurer risk-reduction programs

How it works

Washington law allows a property insurer, with prior approval of the insurance commissioner, to offer or provide risk-mitigation or prevention goods and services as part of a property insurance policy. The law specifically says these goods or services are intended to reduce the probability or extent of loss from a covered event.

For wildfire, the statute specifically names ongoing services such as home safety monitoring and brush clearing to mitigate wildfire losses.

What the money covers

The law is about insurer-provided goods and services, not a state grant. It allows items such as:

• Water monitors
• Foundation strapping for earthquake losses
• Ongoing services such as home safety monitoring
• Ongoing services such as brush clearing to mitigate wildfire losses
• Other goods or services approved by rule

Amounts and matching

• The value of goods and services is limited to $7,500 or 10% of the annual policy premium, whichever is greater, in aggregate during any 12-month period.
• Any goods provided are owned by the insured, even if the insurance is later canceled.
