How it works

Washington law authorizes a property insurer, with prior approval from the commissioner, to include certain goods or services as part of a property insurance policy when those items are intended to reduce loss from a covered event. The statute specifically allows a pilot program as a risk mitigation or prevention strategy.

What the money covers

For wildfire, the law expressly mentions ongoing services, including home safety monitoring or brush clearing to mitigate wildfire losses. The statute also lists a water monitor as an example of covered goods and allows other goods or services the commissioner identifies by rule.

Amounts and matching

The total value of goods and services is limited to $7,500 or 10% of the annual policy premium, whichever is greater, in aggregate during any 12-month period.
