Program details
How it works
The VRFA Wildfire Home Assessment program helps homeowners identify and understand wildfire risks and learn what steps can reduce those risks. Trained VRFA staff survey the home and property, then create a customized plan for improving wildfire preparedness.
What the assessment covers
The inspection looks at wildfire conditions in the area and the home ignition potential in the three Home Ignition Zone sections:
- Immediate Zone: 0–5 feet, including roof, eaves, exterior walls, windows, doors, and deck
- Intermediate Zone: 5–30 feet, including vegetation and outbuildings
- Extended Zone: 30–100 feet, including vegetation and trees
What happens after the visit
The assessment results and specific mitigation recommendations are compiled into a report and shared shortly after the assessment. VRFA also states that a follow-up contact may be made to answer questions and check progress.
How to get started
Homeowners must complete the Wildfire Assessment Request Form. VRFA will contact the homeowner to schedule the assessment. The home is assessed in approximately one hour, followed by a report with recommendations for wildfire mitigation.
Additional support
The page also notes that the South King Tool Library provides access to tools for community members who need them for WUI home projects. VRFA says it has partnered with SKTL so residents can access tools to harden their homes against wildfire.
