How it works

Denton County’s Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) is a proactive planning resource that identifies parts of the county with higher wildfire risk and explains ways to reduce that risk. The county says satellite information from the Texas Forest Service was used to locate areas where dense vegetation is mixed with homes and businesses, and local firefighters then assessed each neighborhood or zone using a standard score sheet.

The neighborhoods were rated as:

  • low
  • moderate
  • high
  • extreme

The county notes that these ratings are a snapshot of a neighborhood on a particular day. A zone’s rating may not reflect the risk of every individual property within it.

What the resource provides

Homeowners are directed to several tools and references:

  • Ready, Set, Go guidance for evaluating and reducing wildfire risk
  • Firewise Communities information from the National Fire Protection Association
  • Firewise: How To Prepare Your Home For Wildfires (PDF)
  • The Denton County Community Wildfire Protection Plan (PDF)
  • Local fire departments and Denton County Emergency Services for help understanding risk and mitigation

What it does not provide

The page does not describe any direct financial assistance, reimbursement, matching funds, or free mitigation work. It is an informational and planning resource rather than a homeowner funding program.
