How it works

Erie County announced a grant program for licensed in-home family and group childcare providers in Erie County. The county says it is using ARPA funds, with the Department of Planning and Community Development working with the Early Learning Resource Center (ELRC) and the two redevelopment authorities to handle inspections, scope of work, contractor bidding, and payments.

What the money covers

The county says the grants are for property-condition and safety needs at in-home childcare facilities. The official application materials say funds may be used for critical safety upgrades including, but not limited to:

• fencing
• roofing
• doors and windows
• electrical systems
• mechanical systems
• ADA modifications

The county also says priority is given to repairs that improve Keystone STARS ratings.

Amounts and matching

The county says the program uses $500,000 in ARPA funds across the childcare rehabilitation effort, but it does not state a per-home maximum on the main page. Separate county coverage says a $400,000 fund was being accepted for building repairs for qualified in-home childcare facilities, and a separate mini-grant pool of $100,000 was being awarded for approved safety items.

How to apply

The county says eligible providers are identified through the ELRC and can apply through the county’s website. The Redevelopment Authority of the City of Erie and the Corry Redevelopment Authority carry out inspections and project administration.
