Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP)

How it works

The Hazard Mitigation Grant Program requires a federal disaster declaration and is used after a Presidential Major Disaster Declaration. PEMA says the purpose is to help communities implement hazard mitigation measures in the affected areas and reduce the risk of loss of life and property from future disasters.

Who applies

The official page says the program is open to local governments or eligible organizations; individuals cannot apply directly.

Timing and deadlines

Once the disaster-declaration requirement is met, eligible municipalities can send a Letter of Intent to begin the process. The page does not give a standing annual deadline because availability depends on declared disasters.
