Low Income Homeowner Assistance Grant

How it works

On Friday, March 27, 2026, the Guilford County Board of County Commissioners approved the Department of Social Services to launch this grant program. The program provides support to low-income homeowners in Guilford County through a one-time grant payment paid directly to the homeowner.

Funds are awarded to qualifying homeowners to help address rising homeownership costs and their impact on low-income homeowners. Applications are processed in the order complete applications are received, and grants are issued until funds are exhausted.

The county notes that the program does not change the requirement to pay property taxes in full and does not affect the tax collector’s responsibility to collect delinquent taxes.

Amounts and matching

The award amount is calculated based on the difference between Guilford County home property taxes paid in tax year 2021 and in tax year 2025, as billed on July 1, 2025. The minimum amount of assistance per household is $50. The page does not state a maximum award amount.

How to apply

The application is available now. Homeowners can apply online from the program page. Paper applications can be picked up at either office location listed on the page, and paper applications can be submitted in person or mailed to the Department of Social Services in Greensboro or High Point.

Timing and deadlines

Residents age 65 and older have the first 30 days of application access. The page lists the application periods as July 15 through August 15 for qualifying residents age 65 and above, and August 16 through October 31 for all qualifying residents.

If an applicant applies during the 65+ only period but does not meet the age requirement, the county says the application will be denied and a new application must be submitted during the correct application period.
