How it works

Richmond County Aging Services says the In Home Aide Services program is intended to help individuals and families maintain independence, improve quality of life, and remain in their own homes as long as possible. It also provides caregiver relief for people who need constant care. The county says there is no cost to the participant, although voluntary contributions are accepted to help expand services.

What the service covers

The aide can help with light housekeeping and essential shopping. The page lists sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, washing dishes, laundry, changing bed linens, grocery shopping, and picking up medications.

What it does not cover

The county explicitly says in-home aides are not allowed to provide transport, pet care, yard maintenance, home repairs, or heavy-duty cleaning.

Amounts and payment

There is no cash grant or rebate. The service is provided at no cost to the client through Home and Community Care Block Grant funding. The page notes the county’s cost to provide the service is $20.47 per hour, but that is not the amount the client pays.

How to apply

The county asks interested people to send a referral letter with the person’s name, address, phone number, date of birth, last 4 digits of Social Security number, why the service is needed, and a contact name and phone number. Mail it to Richmond County Aging Services in Rockingham.

Timing and waiting list

After eligibility is determined, the applicant is added to a waiting list. When a slot becomes available, the county assigns an in-home aide in the person’s area.
