How it works

Nash County says it offers several home repair programs depending on available funding. The most common are emergency repair grants and owner-occupied single-family housing rehabilitation. Applications are only accepted when funds are available, and the county posts notice in local newspapers and on its website. Homeowners can also ask to be added to a notice list for future mailings.

The county notes that emergency repair programs are usually the only actual grants. Larger rehabilitation programs are typically deferred-payment loans rather than grants. In those cases, the county pays the contractor directly, and the homeowner does not make monthly payments. Instead, the county places a lien or deed of trust on the property for a period that is usually 5 to 10 years, and part of the balance is forgiven each year until it reaches zero.

What the money covers

The county’s housing repair materials describe whole-house rehabilitation as work to bring a home up to HUD Rehabilitation Quality Standards. The examples given include heating and air, electrical, plumbing, floors, roof, accessibility, insulation, lead paint testing and treatment, outside stairs and porch rails, wall and ceiling painting, and sometimes new kitchen cabinets. Appliances are not replaced. The county also says some urgent repair funding may address one or two critical problems, such as heating/air, roofs, or accessibility needs.

Amounts and terms

The county’s general housing repair material says the limit for this type of program is usually $5,000 to $8,000 per home, and that full rehab programs often involve $30,000 to $45,000.

How to apply

The county says applications are only taken when a specific grant is open. Interested homeowners may contact the county’s housing staff to be placed on a notice list for future application mailings.

Timing and deadlines

Availability varies by funding year. The county notes that some urgent repair funding has a short application window, and that no Urgent Repair Program was available through Nash County for 2026 in the materials reviewed.
