How it works

DuPage County’s Single-Family Rehabilitation Program provides grants to qualified homeowners to rehabilitate owner-occupied homes. The county says the goal is to correct substandard living conditions, address health or safety hazards, and fix deficiencies in structures and building systems. Applications are available on a referral basis only.

What the money covers

The official program materials say the work can include correction of code violations, health and safety issues, and repair or replacement of eligible components or systems because of system failure, code violation, or a recommendation through a weatherization assessment. Covered items listed by the county include exterior walls and siding, roof and roof systems, doors, windows and window frames, porches, stairs and railings, interior walls and ceilings when there is an actual health and safety threat, well and septic systems, water and sewer connections, electrical systems and fixtures, plumbing systems and fixtures, heating and cooling systems, hot water heaters, insulation, air sealing, chimney repair/tuckpointing, and some demolition. Landscaping, sidewalks, garages, decks, and driveways are only eligible when they are incidental to health and safety work or a code violation.

Amounts and matching

The published maximum grant amount is up to $15,000. The source does not state any homeowner match requirement.

How to apply

Applications are available through the DuPage County Department of Community Services/Single Family Rehabilitation Program on a referral basis only. Referrals are accepted from other DuPage County programs, including weatherization and senior services, and from local municipalities and the county for unincorporated areas when there are code violations, property citations, or other property concerns that could be addressed by the program. The county says it is under no obligation to begin processing until all requested information and supporting documents are provided.

Timing and deadlines

The source does not give a closing date or application deadline. It does state that households previously determined eligible for LIHEAP or weatherization within six months do not have to re-prove income for rehab.
