Program details
How it works
Truckee Fire offers rebates for home hardening upgrades after the work is completed and approved. The district reimburses up to 50% of eligible project costs, with a maximum rebate of $2,000.
What the money covers
Eligible improvements include non-combustible home-hardening materials, Zone Zero hardscaping, fire-retardant tarps, and associated installation labor. The page also highlights upgrades such as using noncombustible materials, making hardscaping improvements within five feet of the home, and installing 1/8-inch metal mesh vent screens or smaller.
Important rules
Applicants must resolve all Zone Zero defensible-space issues before applying. Zone Zero is described as the first 5 feet around the home, and it must be free of combustible materials and unmaintained vegetation, including pine needles, firewood, combustible mulch, overhanging branches, and construction materials.
Only existing, permitted structures are eligible. The page says new construction, outbuildings, and sheds are not eligible.
How to apply
Start by scheduling a full-access defensible-space inspection or using an existing report. Homeowners then review the home-hardening recommendations in the report, complete the upgrades, and collect receipts and photos. The rebate application is submitted through the defensible-space report by clicking the “Rebates” tab and creating a login. If that is not possible, a PDF application is available.
Timing and deadlines
The page says purchases and labor completed before 2023-08-14 are not eligible. Rebates are issued after project completion and approval.
Documentation and homeowner responsibilities
Homeowners are responsible for obtaining any required HOA approvals and permits. The application process calls for receipts, photos, and access to the defensible-space report or inspection report.
