Free Roadside Chipping

How it works

Free Roadside Chipping is a wildfire fuel-reduction service for Monterey County homeowners. Residents sign up to be placed on a list of interested properties. When the council has funding and enough nearby sign-ups, it schedules chipping crews for that neighborhood and notifies everyone who registered.

What the service covers

The program chips wildfire fuels that homeowners have already cut and piled by the road. The page does not describe any other eligible work, reimbursement, or cash payment. It is specifically framed as free roadside chipping of vegetation cuttings.

Timing and neighborhood requirements

The page says the council generally needs about 20–30 properties near each other before it can schedule crews in an area. If your neighborhood is not yet ready, the signup page may say there are no planned pick-ups in your area; the page says this is normal until enough neighbors sign up and funding is secured.

Notice period and preparation

If your area is selected, homeowners will be notified at least three weeks before crews come through. That lead time is intended to give residents time to cut and pile vegetation near the road. Instructions on how to pile cuttings are provided during the signup process.

Important cautions

The page warns not to pile cuttings by the road expecting them to be chipped until you have been notified of the chipping dates for your area. It also says the address entered during signup must be correct so crews can find the location when service is scheduled.

About the program sponsor

The Fire Safe Council for Monterey County says it is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization funded entirely by grants and donations, and that these funds support wildfire mitigation efforts throughout Monterey County.
