Defensible Space Assistance Program

How it works

The Defensible Space Assistance Program helps homeowners create defensible space when they cannot do the work because of physical, economic, or other barriers. The council says it can complete one day of work per household, and it does not guarantee that the full 100 feet of defensible space will be completed.

What the service covers

The program can do:

• Tree trimming from the ground with a pole saw
• Brush clearance
• Invasive species removal
• Small-diameter tree removal
• Weed abatement
• Raking leaves and pine needles
• Chipping of cleared material, left on site

The program cannot do:

• Hazardous tree removal
• Tree climbing
• Hauling away material
• Landscaping services

How it works with the assessment program

Before receiving DSAP service, homeowners must participate in the Home Assessment Program. The council says the assessment helps set priorities for the defensible-space crew.

Funding and service limits

The program is funding dependent and offered on a first-come, first-served basis as funds are available. It is provided by the Fire Safe Council of San Diego County in partnership with the Resource Conservation District of Greater San Diego County, with funding from San Diego Gas & Electric.

Homeowners first search the interactive map to confirm the address is within the service area, then submit an application for the Home Assessment Program and DSAP.
