Community Wildfire Defense Grant project: free wildfire home assessments and defensible space work

How it works

The Fire Safe Council of Siskiyou County says its Community Wildfire Defense Grant project includes multiple phases for residents across the county. Those phases include free wildfire home assessments, defensible space work on approximately 500 homes, fuel reduction and roadside fuel breaks to improve firefighter and resident access, and community outreach events.

What the money covers

The project page specifically says the grant supports:

• free wildfire home assessments,
• defensible space work,
• fuel reduction and roadside fuel breaks,
• and outreach about defensible space, home hardening, wildfire preparedness, mitigation, and response resources.

The page also says the home assessment process uses Fire Aside home assessment software and focuses on defensible space and home hardening.

Amounts and matching

The page does not state a dollar amount available to individual homeowners. The homeowner-facing benefit described on the official page is free assessment and free defensible space work.

How to apply

The page directs residents to sign up for the free wildfire home assessment through the Fire Safe Council’s CWDG information page.

Timing and deadlines

The official page does not give a hard program end date. It says the project is underway and that more than 100 community members had already signed up as of the page update.

What makes it homeowner-hardening relevant

This is one of the clearest county-specific wildfire home-hardening services in Siskiyou County: it provides a no-cost assessment and then funds mitigation work that reduces ember and vegetation risk around homes.
