What the money covers

The official application packet says grant proceeds may only be used for the costs of services and materials necessary to carry out the repair work. Eligible repairs include, among other things: roof repair or replacement, window repair or replacement, stucco repair or replacement, installation of new smoke alarms, electrical work, fencing repair, insulation, dead bolt locks, and correction of hazardous structural conditions or other public health and safety issues identified by the program inspector.

Amounts and matching

The application packet states grants are up to a maximum of $5,000 per household. The FAQ says the program also offers 3% interest deferred loans, but the available official materials here do not state a loan maximum.

How to apply

Applicants must submit a completed application packet to the city. The packet says work cannot begin until permits are issued and a Proceed Order is issued by the City of Irvine. The city also says it will not reimburse work already started or materials already purchased.

Timing and deadlines

The packet requires homeowners to permit inspections, and it says the city determines eligibility. The current official web page does not clearly state whether the program is open continuously or by cycle, so current availability should be confirmed with the city before applying.
