Program details
How it works
Wood County’s Tree and Shrub sale has been offering landowners the opportunity to purchase trees at minimal cost for over 25 years. The county describes it as a sale program run by the Wood County Land and Water Conservation Department.
What the money covers
The sale includes a variety of conifers, hardwoods, shrubs, wildflower seeds, and grass seeds. The page also lists related supplies and equipment information for items such as four-foot Plantra tree shelters, Plantra SunFlex Grow Tubes, generic gel, and tree spades. The page does not describe a wildfire-mitigation purpose directly, but these items can support vegetation establishment around a property.
Amounts and matching
The only price-related detail on the page is that the items are offered at minimal cost. The page does not give a subsidy amount, reimbursement amount, discount percentage, or match requirement.
How to apply
The order form becomes available in November and is posted on the county page between November and January. Homeowners can order trees through mid-January. The page says to order early because popular trees sell fast. If you are interested in participating, or want to be added to the email or mail list, the page directs you to contact the Wood County Land and Water Conservation Department at 715-421-8475 or barb.peeters@woodcountywi.gov.
Timing and deadlines
Tree pickup is at the Wood County forestry garage at 650 17th Avenue North, Wisconsin Rapids, and typically occurs in late April depending on weather conditions. All people ordering receive a notice with exact pickup details before distribution. Payment by cash or check is due at the time of order. The county does not accept credit cards.
Additional notes
Wildflower and seed mixes are available for ordering year-round, but if they are ordered outside the tree/shrub sale dates, the county will notify you when they are available for pickup at the Land & Water Conservation office. Items not picked up on the designated date and time are not available for pickup or refund unless arrangements were made with the office before the distribution date.
