Program details
How it works
Chesterfield County says streetlights can be added to existing residential neighborhoods if approved by the Board of Supervisors. The request process is intended to make installation economical and fair across neighborhoods and residents.
How to apply
Applicants must complete a streetlight in an existing neighborhood application. The county reviews the application for completeness and may follow up with questions.
Key application elements include:
- the desired location of the light
- if possible, placement on existing utility poles or otherwise in the public right of way
- the proposed light should be more than 200 feet from an existing streetlight
- selection of a light style; the county lists Basic Acorn, Cobra, Cutoff Colonial, or Traditional Colonial
- a signed application petition that includes 75% of all residents within 200 feet of the proposed location
After the county receives the utility’s design and price, the Board of Supervisors evaluates the application and approves or denies spending funds for installation.
If approved, the county contracts the supplying utility to install the light.
Timing and deadlines
The county says installation timing depends on parts supply, weather, project complexity, and construction crew availability. Project completion can take 6 to 12 months.
Other notes
- The supplying utility is usually Dominion Energy or Southside Electric Cooperative.
- The page does not state a funding cap or a specific dollar amount.
