Home Repair for the Elderly Program (HREP)

How it works

The Home Repair for the Elderly Program is a Fairfax County service for eligible homeowners who need minor repairs or accessibility modifications. The county says it provides a crew for up to one week of labor and up to $1,000 in materials, and that all labor and materials are free of charge to eligible homeowners.

What the work can cover

The county lists typical services such as minor electrical repair, window and door repair, minor plumbing repair, screen replacement for windows and doors, gutter and downspout repair for one-story maximum, installation of grab bars and hand railings, repair or replacement of electric hot water heaters, minor deck repairs that are non-structural, power washing, and minor HOA repair-list items. The county also says emergency repairs, work requiring more than a six-foot ladder, and projects requiring building permits or licensing cannot be provided through the program.
