Program details

How it works

The Wildfire Prepared Home program is a homeowner-led certification process developed by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS). New Mexico’s Office of the Superintendent of Insurance says homeowners can use the resulting certificate to show their insurer that they have taken defined wildfire mitigation steps, and that the certificate may help lower insurance rates.

What the money covers

This program is not a grant or rebate. It is a certification/assessment program; the practical homeowner value is the ability to document mitigation work to an insurer. New Mexico OSI also says residents can receive a discount on the application fee by using the coupon code “NM GRANT.”

Timing and availability

New Mexico state forestry materials say applications are available through wildfireprepared.org and that the program includes a checklist of standards for wildfire preparedness. After the home passes an assessment, a designation certificate is provided for the insurer.

What homeowners should know

The state’s wildfire and homeowners-insurance pages describe this as a way to harden a home against wildfire, and note that the designation can be shared with the property insurer. The program includes retrofit and new-construction paths.
