How it works

New Shoreham says the town is vulnerable to hurricanes, thunderstorms, high winds, winter-related hazards, flood-related hazards, and coastal erosion. The town’s Block Island Hazard Mitigation Plan was adopted by the Town Council on 2017-07-05 and approved by FEMA on 2017-07-27. New Shoreham met the criteria to enter the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) Community Rating System (CRS) in 2019 at a Class 8 rating.

Participation in CRS is a community-level floodplain management program. The town says this participation demonstrates its commitment to floodplain management, property protection, and public safety, and it grants property owners a discount on their flood insurance premiums.

What homeowners get

As a Class 8 CRS community, New Shoreham flood insurance policyholders in special flood hazard areas receive a 10% discount on their flood insurance premium. Policyholders in zones outside special flood hazard areas receive a 5% discount on their flood insurance premium.

What the money covers
