Defensible Space Assessment Incentive Reimbursement Pilot Program

How it works

The Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Defensible Space Assessment Incentive Reimbursement Pilot Program provides a $250 incentive to eligible participants in selected high-wildfire-hazard and socially vulnerable communities. The program is limited, one-time funding and is intended to encourage residents to implement recommendations from a defensible space assessment.

What the money covers

The incentive is for defensible space improvement costs. The official guidelines say the $250 amount is intended to reimburse roughly eight hours of defensible space work at a national volunteer wage estimate.

How to apply

Participants must request and receive a defensible space assessment from fire service members or Oregon State Fire Marshal personnel. The assessment identifies areas of improvement on the OSFM defensible space checklist, and participants must address at least two improvement areas to qualify.

Timing and administration

The program became effective March 11, 2024, and a new criteria set became effective December 2, 2024. The program is administered by the Oregon State Fire Marshal.
