Program details

How it works

The City of Grants Pass says it received a $296,000 Community Wildfire Risk Reduction grant from the Oregon State Fire Marshal. The money is being used to cover the costs of creating defensible space around homes to help protect against wildfire.

The city describes the program as voluntary and funded 100% by the State of Oregon. Residents in the most at-risk areas of the city are targeted first.

What the money covers

The city says the assessor will focus on the area from 5 to 10 feet from the house. Recommended work can include removing shrubs or bark dust, replacing them with more fire-tolerant plants and gravel, and pruning trees up to six feet above the ground.

Amounts and matching

There is no cost to the applicant. The landscaper or contractor bills the City directly.

How to apply

Residents can email firedefense@grantspassoregon.gov, call 541-450-6200, or visit the Parkway Fire Station at 800 East Park St. between 8 am and 4 pm Monday through Friday.

Timing and deadlines

The city says applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. It also says fire personnel will be knocking on doors in high-risk areas to notify residents about the program.
