Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District · County program
Free seasonal green-waste disposal
Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue offers free seasonal green-waste drop-off events for Washoe County residents to help them remove wildfire fuels and create defensible space. The program is a no-cost disposal service, not a cash grant.
Program details
How it works
Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue (TMFR) runs Green Waste Collection Days as a free, seasonal drop-off program. Residents bring dry and dead vegetation and other natural wildfire fuels to designated locations, where TMFPD provides dumpsters and staff support on-site. The district says the program is an alternative to creating defensible space and helps protect homes and property from wildfires.
What the service covers
The page says this is a free event sponsored by the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District, with support from the Nevada Division of Forestry and Waste Management. It covers disposal of natural green waste only. Residents unload their own material into the dumpsters at the event sites.
Accepted and rejected materials
Accepted examples include junipers, pines, rabbitbrush, sagebrush, and other woody vegetation. The district states that only natural vegetation is allowed.
The program does not accept:
- Household garbage and trash
- Lumber
- Hazardous materials
- Grass clippings
- Dirt and gravel
- Stumps with root balls
- Tree stumps more than 8 inches in diameter
- Bags of waste, unless emptied on-site and the bags removed
- Foreign items such as metal or plastic that could damage equipment or cause injury
- Commercial waste from contractors or landscape companies
