How it works

Reno Fire Department’s Home Wildfire Fuels Reduction Dumpster Program gives neighborhoods a 30-yard dumpster to use for vegetative waste and yard debris. The dumpster is delivered on a Thursday and picked up on a Tuesday, and residents use it over the weekend. The program is designed to help homeowners create defensible space around homes in Reno’s wildland-urban interface areas.

What the money covers

This is a free disposal service, not a cash payment. The dumpster is for vegetative waste and yard debris only. Construction materials, manmade materials, and bags are not allowed, and vegetation should not be bagged. Residents are required to make sure only vegetative waste is placed in the dumpster and that it is secured closed once full.

Funding and partners

The City says the program is made possible through grants obtained from State Farm and Waste Management.

How to use it

Reno Fire says to check dumpster availability by calling the fire department or using the program’s online posting. In 2024, the city also said one green-waste dumpster would be available to the entire public at Fire Station #11 for a limited date window.

Timing and deadlines

The city has run this as a recurring seasonal program since 2021, and it was active again in 2024 and 2025. Specific neighborhood scheduling and application timing are announced separately each year.
