Wildfire Prepared Home program

How it works

The Wildfire Prepared Home program is a homeowner-led certification program developed by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS). New Mexico’s Office of the Superintendent of Insurance (OSI) says the program helps homeowners harden their homes against wildfire and can provide a path to lower insurance rates.

Homeowners start by following the program’s standards, which OSI describes as beginning with removing flammable material within five feet of the house. After an evaluator confirms the home meets the requirements, the homeowner receives a certificate. That certificate can be shared with the homeowner’s insurance company as evidence of wildfire risk mitigation.

OSI says the program includes two plans: one for retrofitting existing homes and one for new construction.

What the program covers

Official New Mexico sources describe the program as focused on wildfire mitigation and home hardening, especially against wind-driven embers. The public OSI materials do not list every eligible repair item on the state pages, but they do identify the program as covering measures that harden the home and property against wildfire risk.

Amounts and matching

This is not a grant or rebate. The public state sources do not state any cash amount, match, or reimbursement. The benefit described by the state is a possible insurance-rate benefit through the certification.

How to apply

New Mexico state pages direct homeowners to apply through IBHS’s Wildfire Prepared website. OSI also notes that New Mexico residents can receive a discount on the application fee by using coupon code “NMGRANT.”

Timing and deadlines

The state pages do not list a deadline or a closing date. OSI materials indicate the program is currently available to New Mexico homeowners.
