How it works

The City of Farmington’s official WUI page explains wildfire risk in the city, provides a wildfire interface map, and links homeowners to defensible-space and home-ignition-zone guidance. The page says the city planning division created the map with help from the Farmington Fire Department, San Juan County, and the Bureau of Land Management Farmington Field Office.

What the page tells homeowners to do

The city’s guidance emphasizes that a home’s roofing material and the quality of defensible space are major factors in surviving wildfire. It recommends fire-resistant roofing, fire-resistive materials, and reducing fuels and vegetation around the home. The page also breaks out immediate, intermediate, and extended zones and gives practical steps such as cleaning roofs and gutters, repairing loose shingles and window screens, installing 1/8-inch metal mesh screening on vents, moving flammable items away from walls, keeping flammable debris at least 50 feet from the house, pruning trees, and thinning vegetation.
