Program details

How it works

The Grand Island Fire Department's Residential Knox Box Loaner Program provides a City-owned residential Knox Box to approved residents. The box stores a spare house key and can only be opened by authorized emergency responders during an emergency incident. Once a resident is approved, Fire Department personnel install the Knox Box at the home.

What the program is for

The program is intended to help firefighters and paramedics reach residents more quickly during emergencies while reducing the need for forced entry. The city says this can also help prevent unnecessary damage to the home.

Amounts and availability

The homeowner pays nothing for the loaner box. The city says each Knox Box costs approximately $565. The Fire Department currently has 10 loaner Knox Boxes available through the program. If demand exceeds the current supply, eligible applicants will be placed on a waiting list while the department pursues additional funding to expand the program.

How to apply

Applications can be completed online at www.gifire.org/knoxbox. Residents who need help completing an application or have questions can contact the Grand Island Fire Department at (308) 385-5300 or visit Fire Station No. 1 or Fire Administration at City Hall.

Timing and funding

The city announced the program on July 21, 2026. The program launched with an initial donation from the American Red Cross. The fire department says it will pursue grant opportunities and additional community partnerships as the program grows. The American Red Cross is partnering with Heartland United Way, NextPoint Home Development, Grand Island Area Habitat for Humanity, and the Multicultural Coalition to raise awareness and connect eligible residents with the program.
