How it works
Montana property owners whose homes, buildings, or forestland were damaged or destroyed by a natural disaster may qualify for property-tax relief. The Department of Revenue says eligible property may receive a reduced taxable value, and the reduction is prorated based on the number of days in the current tax year that the property was unsuitable for its previous use.
What the money covers
The page says the relief can apply to completely or partially destroyed:
- real property dwellings
- real property improvements such as garages, sheds, barns, and grain bins
- manufactured housing and mobile homes
- business equipment
If a property is destroyed after the owner pays property taxes, the owner may be eligible for a refund.
How to apply
Apply by completing Natural Disaster Application Form AB-25. The Department says you must apply within 2 years of the date the property was destroyed by the natural disaster.
Timing and deadlines
The deadline stated on the page is 2 years from the date of destruction.
Notes
The page also says the Department can provide replacement copies of property records and other information needed to complete the application.
