Program details

How it works

Montana’s Homestead Reduced Rate lowers property taxes for homeowners who occupy their Montana home as their principal residence for at least seven months per year. The classification carries a reduced tax rate compared with standard Class 4 residential property.

What it covers

This is a property tax classification benefit, not a reimbursement program. The official page does not provide money for a specific wildfire-hardening project or service.

Timing and deadlines

The enrollment portal is open for the 2027 tax year. The application period for the 2027 tax year is May 4, 2026 through March 1, 2027.

Notes

The state says that if the principal residence portion of a parcel was already automatically enrolled because of a 2025 tax rebate, the owner still must separately enroll any other dwellings on the property as long-term rentals to receive the reduced rate on those portions.
