How it works

The Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) provides a free home wildfire risk assessment. A local fire professional visits the property, evaluates the home and the area immediately surrounding it, and provides actionable recommendations on how to reduce wildfire risk, plan for evacuation, and live more safely with wildfire in Montana.

What the money covers

This is a free service, not a cash payment. DNRC says there is no cost for the assessment.

Timing and deadlines

The page does not list an application deadline. Homeowners request a site visit through the online form, and DNRC says that once the request is submitted, a local fire professional will contact the homeowner to schedule the visit.

What homeowners get

DNRC says the visit is intended to identify hazards and recommend specific actions that, if implemented, can help decrease the risk of property damage and loss from wildfire. The agency also notes that the assessment can be useful even for homes outside the wildland-urban interface.
