Firewise

How it works

Firewise is an educational program for homeowners and community leaders living in or connected to the wildland-urban interface. The Mississippi Forestry Commission says the program helps people design, construct, landscape, and maintain homes and communities to better withstand wildfires.

What homeowners learn

The page says Firewise teaches:

• limiting flammable vegetation,
• choosing fire-resistant building materials and construction techniques,
• periodic exterior maintenance,
• and how to work within the three home ignition zones.

It also highlights practical steps such as trimming branches that overhang the home, porch, and deck; pruning trees; keeping street names and numbers legible; and making driveways wide enough and tall enough for emergency vehicle access.
