Program details

How it works

IPL offers a whole-house surge protector to residential customers for protection against surges entering the home through electric power lines. IPL installs the surge protection device behind the outside electric meter and leases it to the homeowner on a monthly basis.

What the money covers

The device detects surges and redirects them to ground. The page says the IPL program protects only against surges through the meter, not surges through cable, telephone, or satellite wiring. It also notes that point-of-use surge protectors should be used for other wiring types.

Amounts and matching

  • Residential Surge Protection: $4.95 per month added to the City of Independence Utilities Bill
  • Warranty coverage: up to $5,000 for damage to appliances and other equipment caused by a power surge entering from electric distribution lines

How to apply

The page provides a Service Agreement Form and says customers can call (816) 325-7485 or contact IPL by email for more information.

Timing and deadlines

  • The page does not give an end date or deadline
  • The charge is monthly while the service is in place
