Program details

How it works

The Hutchinson Housing and Redevelopment Authority (HRA) offers a direct grant for emergency home repairs. The program is intended to help with urgent conditions that could make a home uninhabitable.

What the money covers

Eligible repairs include:

  • Failure of a heating system
  • Failure of an electrical system
  • Failure of a ventilation system
  • Failure of a plumbing system
  • Other emergency conditions that could cause the home to be or become uninhabitable, considered case by case

The repair work must be subject to a building, electrical, or state electrical inspector inspection. If the repair is not subject to one of those inspections, the homeowner is not eligible.

Amounts and matching

  • Maximum grant: $5,000
  • Any amount above the cap is the homeowner’s responsibility
  • Funds are paid directly to the contractor on behalf of the homeowner after project completion
  • Funds may not be used to purchase only equipment or materials
  • Two comparable bids from Minnesota-licensed contractors are required with the application
  • Homeowner-paid administration fees listed by the HRA may be wrapped into the grant if they do not exceed the maximum grant:
    • $350 loan application fee
    • $50 title search fee

How to apply

  • Submit the program application with two comparable bids
  • The repair cannot start before HRA approval
  • The contractor must obtain applicable city building permits and state electrical and plumbing permits before work begins and must follow the permit inspection process

Timing and deadlines

The official page does not state a fixed application window or deadline. It says work may not begin before approval.
