Program details

How it works

Lakeshore Habitat for Humanity says its Home Repair Program helps homeowners with essential repairs that improve safety, accessibility, and energy efficiency. Van Buren County’s official page says the program is backed by “MI Neighborhood” funding from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA).

The Habitat page says applicants first submit a home repair interest form, then complete a full application if pre-screened, after which the property is assessed. Habitat then defines the scope of work with the homeowner, obtains two licensed and insured contractor quotes, secures funding, schedules and completes the work, inspects the repairs, and pays contractors after work is completed.

What the money covers

The county’s announcement says potential projects can include:

  • Critical repairs such as plumbing hazards, electrical issues, unsecured entries, and heating/cooling systems
  • Accessibility improvements such as ramps, railings, grab bars, and walk-in showers
  • Exterior rehabilitation such as siding replacement, roofing, and repairing structural damage

The Habitat page describes the program more broadly as home repair services that may include painting, landscaping, weatherization, and minor repair services, but the county page is the clearer source for the South Haven-area repair categories.

Amounts and matching

The official pages do not state a fixed dollar amount for the repair assistance. Van Buren County says some qualified homeowners may receive home repair work “at no cost.”

How to apply

Applicants start with the interest form on Lakeshore Habitat’s site. The county says homeowners can also email or call the Habitat team for information, and that a community information session was held on 2026-05-20.

Timing and deadlines

The county’s announcement says the program is currently available for South Haven residents and that more funding is expected to reach other county areas later, but it does not give an end date.
