How it works

Grand Rapids Fire Department says the Residential Safety Program provides a free home safety assessment for eligible homeowners. The city installs smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in the home.

What the service covers

The city says it provides:

• A fire safety check
• Free smoke alarm upgrades and installations
• Free carbon monoxide alarm installations
• One-on-one fire safety consultation
• A connection with partners to assist with fire safety issues

How to apply

Residents are told to call 311 or 616-456-3000. The city says staff will confirm eligibility and schedule the appointment in one call.

Purpose

The program is voluntary and is designed to prevent fires and reduce the number and severity of fires in homes.
