How it works
Maine Forest Service says it offers a free fuel reduction chipping program to communities interested in reducing wildfire risk near homes. Communities work with their local Forest Ranger to deliver the program.
What the service covers
The state provides:
- a wood chipper
- a modified stake-body truck to haul chips at no cost to the community
- one person to operate the chipper
The state also hauls the unwanted chips to a nearby location or, when feasible, to a wood pellet mill for recycling.
What participants must do
The program description says communities are responsible for publicizing the event, distributing Firewise brochures, collecting homeowner applications, and providing a crew of at least four to help haul and feed brush into the chipper.
Homeowners are responsible for:
- creating defensible space within 30 feet of their homes
- trimming ladder fuels at least 10 feet above the ground
- hauling material to be chipped close to a road
- ensuring the material is clean of contaminants
