How it works

The Low Income Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) provides eligible households with full-scale home energy efficiency services at no cost to the resident. The program is funded by an annual grant from the U.S. Department of Energy and administered by a network of local agencies across Massachusetts.

What the money covers

The official page says an average of $4,725 in allowable energy efficiency measures is available for eligible households. Common measures include:

  • Air sealing to reduce infiltration
  • Attic insulation
  • Sidewall insulation
  • Floor insulation
  • Pipe and/or duct insulation
  • Limited energy-related repairs

Homes also receive a thorough evaluation of the heating system and health and safety testing of all combustion appliances. The work is completed by local licensed and insured private-sector weatherization contractors.
