Vernon Parish Police Jury Hardship Policy

Vernon Parish Police Jury · County program

Up to $1,000 in parish work for qualifying road-access hardship cases

Vernon Parish offers a hardship program that can provide parish-funded road-access work for needy residents who own a home without reasonable all-weather access. The assistance is capped at $1,000 and is for grading, repairing, graveling, and maintaining a private access road, not home hardening.

Program details

How it works

The Vernon Parish Police Jury says it may, after determining an actual hardship exists, repair private property for a needy parishioner using parish equipment, employees, and materials, with the cost paid from the parish general fund. The policy dates to July 8, 1991.

What the money covers

The assistance is for road-access work only: grading, repairing, graveling, and maintaining the road leading to the home. The ordinance limits the work to:

  • no more than one-fourth mile in length
  • no more than 12 feet wide travel surface
  • no more than 150 cubic yards of pit run and/or 15 yards of washed rock
  • no more than $1,000 in cost

How it applies

The parish road manager/parish engineer or designee inspects the site, completes the evaluation form, and submits a recommendation and backup to the highway committee. Each case is reviewed individually and then placed before the full jury for approval.

Timing

The policy is handled on a case-by-case basis during monthly police jury public meetings. If approved, the parish road manager/parish engineer certifies the amount of assistance and schedules the work.

Important limitation

This is an access/road-maintenance hardship policy, not a wildfire, hurricane, or structural home-hardening grant.
