How it works

The Louisiana Department of Insurance says homeowners may be eligible for an insurance premium discount for voluntarily strengthening their homes against storms and hurricanes in compliance with the Louisiana State Uniform Construction Code Council. All admitted insurance companies are mandated to offer actuarially justified premium discounts for wind mitigation. Surplus lines insurers are not required to offer these discounts.

What the discount is tied to

The discount depends on the structural features documented during a home assessment. The department says the inspection and certification must be performed by a building code enforcement officer, registered architect or engineer, or a registered third-party provider authorized by the Louisiana State Uniform Construction Code Council to perform building inspections.

How to apply

Homeowners should contact their insurance company or agent to discuss available discounts. If moving forward, the homeowner completes Section I of the Wind Mitigation Survey Form, finds an authorized surveyor in the LSUCCC database, and submits the completed form to the insurance company or agent.
