How it works

Fire Safety Solutions for Lafayette is a no-cost program run by the Lafayette Fire Department. It distributes and installs free smoke alarms and alert equipment in homes for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. The department says it received funding through FEMA’s Fire Prevention and Safety Grant to install suitable early warning devices.

What the money covers

The program provides:

• Installation of smoke alarms and alert equipment in the home
• A bed shaker and a very loud, low-frequency bedside alert signal
• In some homes, a strobe light to alert individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing in the event of a fire
• Help with planning a home fire drill
• Assistance with a home safety survey to help prevent fires, burns, falls, and other common home injuries

How to apply

Applicants can submit an application online. The page says to download and save the PDF form, open it in Adobe Reader, fill it out, and submit it using the Email Form button at the bottom. Applicants can also complete the application at their local fire department and send it to the Lafayette Fire Department Fire Prevention Division by mail, fax, or email.

Timing and deadlines

The program is available while supplies last. The page says installations began in January 2020 and will continue as long as supplies and funding are available.

Other notes

After eligibility is determined, the information is passed to the local fire station, which contacts the applicant to schedule installation. About three months after installation, a surveyor from the Lafayette Fire Department contacts the household for brief follow-up questions.
