Smoke Detector Assistance Program

How it works

Charlotte County Fire & EMS offers a Smoke Detector Assistance Program for residents. Firefighters can come out and help make sure smoke alarms are working properly.

What the service covers

According to the county, firefighters can:

• Check smoke detectors to ensure they are working properly
• Replace batteries in existing smoke detectors that are less than 10 years old
• Install resident-provided, non-electric smoke detectors with sealed 10-year batteries
• Install hardwired smoke detectors that match the home’s existing wiring configuration
• Provide fire safety education, smoke-detector maintenance information, and fire-extinguisher guidance

The county states it cannot perform rewiring or electrical modifications.
