Emergency Home Repair Assistance

How it works

Sumter County Housing Services provides emergency home repair assistance to homeowners whose owner-occupied, site-built house needs urgent repairs. The application cycle is open until all funds are expended, and assistance is awarded on a first-qualified, first-served basis.

What the money covers

Repairs and related costs listed on the page include:

• Septic system repair or replacement
• Roof replacement
• Well repair or replacement, including necessary wiring and/or plumbing
• HVAC system repair or replacement, including installation of a new heating unit if the homeowner does not have an existing system
• All costs associated with connecting an eligible residence to a municipality public water and sewer main
• Installation of ramps and handicap accessible bathrooms that require immediate attention and make the residence more accessible to persons who have special needs

Amounts and repayment

• Maximum award: $15,000
• Assistance is a zero percent interest loan
• The loan is secured by a recorded mortgage and promissory note
• Monthly payments are required
• The county states the loan will be awarded for the amount required to complete the project and allow the homeowner to qualify, so the full maximum will not always be awarded
