How it works

SLASH stands for Sustainable Lands and Safer Homes. Jefferson County operates slash yards where residents can bring wildfire fuels removed from around their property, such as tree limbs, prunings, pine cones, and similar debris. The county frames the program as part of its wildfire mitigation efforts and says removing slash helps reduce fire hazards around homes.

What the money covers

The program accepts clean materials only at its slash sites. The page says all material must be free of trash, debris, rocks, and yard waste. Pine needles must be separated from slash and placed in the appropriate area. Accepted material includes nature-based debris, while prohibited materials include construction materials and lumber, tree stumps, and detached leaves.

Amounts and matching

This is not a grant or rebate. The page lists a dump fee of $24 per load, with one load defined as six cubic yards (162 cubic feet). Credit cards only are accepted. The page gives examples of how loads are calculated and notes that larger loads are charged accordingly. Residents may also self-load mulch for free from the Tincup Ridge SLASH Yard during normal collection hours.

How to apply

There is no formal application described. Residents use the county’s drop-off sites and follow the posted schedule and materials rules. The county also offers a SLASH alert system for real-time updates on closures, weather cancellations, and program or location changes.

Timing and deadlines

The 2026 SLASH season begins 2026-05-15. The page says Marshdale opens 2026-07-30 and is expected to be open Thursdays through Sundays until 2026-09-13. Marshdale closes at 3 p.m. and may close sooner due to capacity or weather. For mountain pine beetle-infested logs, the page says they are accepted only at the Tincup Ridge SLASH Yard and should be brought before June 15 and after September 30.
