How it works

The City of Thornton says the Help for Homes program offers eligible Thornton homeowners up to $10,000 in free home repairs. The stated purpose is to improve the health, safety, accessibility, and energy efficiency of homes.

The city says the program is not an emergency assistance program and not a home repair reimbursement program. It also says there is a waitlist of over 30 homes and that the program is currently closed to new applications.

What the money covers

Eligible projects include improvements or replacements for:

• Accessibility items such as chair lifts, grab bars, indoor/outdoor rails, stairs, and walk-in shower replacements
• Electrical
• Water and sewer lines
• Furnace
• Lead testing and remediation
• Other safety repairs
• Plumbing
• Radon testing and remediation
• Roof replacements
• Water heaters

Process

If approved, city staff and Brothers Redevelopment conduct a walk-through home assessment, obtain contractor estimates, define the approved scope, coordinate contractor scheduling, and complete final inspections.

Timing and deadlines

• Closed to new applications as of 2026-01-01.
• The city says it anticipates additional funding after August 2026.
• While the waitlist remains, projects may take four to six months or longer to complete.
