Program details
How it works
Sebastian County’s CERT program is a free preparedness training and volunteer support program. The county says the training helps participants understand threats to their home, workplace, and community and gives them practical skills to reduce the effects of hazards on themselves and others. CERT members can then apply those skills in a disaster or in non-emergency community safety projects.
What the service includes
The FAQ says CERT members have been used to:
- distribute and/or install smoke alarms
- replace smoke alarm batteries in the homes of elderly residents
- distribute disaster education material
- provide services at special events such as parades, sporting events, and concerts
- support responders at a disaster site as directed
The county also notes that CERT members may help their family, neighbors, and associates immediately after a disaster until professional help arrives.
How it helps homeowners
The training is intended to help residents take the right steps to lessen hazards affecting their homes and families. It is described as useful for both disaster and everyday emergency situations.
