Program details

How it works

Colbert County says the Commission, with FEMA grant support, has erected community storm shelters in 22 locations throughout the county. The shelters are designed to provide “safe harbor” during severe weather conditions.

What the money covers

This program does not pay homeowners to harden their houses. Instead, it provides access to community storm shelters built of reinforced concrete or steel.

Timing and use

The shelters open when a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued by the National Weather Service or when wind speeds are officially recorded at 50 mph or greater.

What a homeowner gets

Residents can use the shelters as a free community protection measure during severe weather events. The county page also notes that additional shelters are being planned.
