How it works

The Alabama Department of Insurance says the state established wind mitigation discounts for IBHS FORTIFIED residential and commercial structures. The Department states that Alabama legislation requires all insurers in the state to provide discounts once structures have been built or retrofitted to IBHS FORTIFIED standards.

Amounts

The Department’s bulletin announced benchmark discounts ranging from 35% to 60% on the hurricane portion of the premium and from 20% to 35% on the other wind portion of the premium. The Department says these discounts were calculated by county.

What it covers

This is an insurance premium reduction, not a cash grant. The Department says the discounts apply after a structure has been built or retrofitted to IBHS FORTIFIED standards and certified.

Who should care

The Department says strengthening a home through Strengthen Alabama Homes may qualify the owner for these premium discounts, and the FORTIFIED standard must be met and certified to take advantage of them.
